I'd like to introduce to you, Alexis.
This little cutie just became a big sister on Monday!

Seems to be a trend (probably just in age) but boooy, did she make me work for my shots! Her mommy was ready to have her baby brother "any minute now" the day that we did this shoot (couple of days later she did!). So, if I had to chase Alexis around the living room to tickle her, then so be it! We wanted to make sure to capture her as she was when her little brother was born.

We danced, we sang, we played chase ... all while Reed napped in his room. Shame, he would have really liked to meet Alexis. She was a lot of fun!

Hopefully, she will be back soon for pictures with her new brother!! Congrats to her family, we wish you the best.

Beautiful little Talia

Beautiful little Talia is a good example of why a photographer should always be on their toes! If I had just told her mom, "well, she doesn't want her pictures taken today sorry" we would have missed some of her most beautiful moments. Those moments are when a child is just being themselves ... and it's not always the side that mom would like them to be at that moment, right?! Not all kids (especially at 2 years old) are going to flash their best "cheese" on command (my son would be one of those kids!!).

I was happy to have the chance to capture Talia ... even on her terms.

That's the way God makes them - love every moment of it!

A House FULL of Blessings

How can you NOT have fun photographing a family with 7 kids? Well ... I have to admit, I was pretty nervous going into this session. But it didn't take long before I caught their enthusiasm ... and these kids where pros in front of the camera! This wasn't their first family shoot - that was for SURE!

They spent the morning just being themselves and I did what I do - capturing it best I could! Everyone seemed to really be enjoying themselves. It was fun to get a glimpse of what must go on in such a FULL house ... but sure glad I don't have to worry about being the "bathroom police" on Monday mornings in that place! yikes!

One of my favorite shots is below where the kids are all chasing each other and baby Joshua is running away just as it becomes chaos! It's like he knew everyone was going to end up on the ground and he didn't want to be in the way. It may prove that the 7th child is instinctually born with knowing when to say "I'm outta here!"

I'd like to thank the Hoovers for making my job easy & for reminding me to watch what I pray for - maybe 1 little boy is plenty!

Hand Them the Camera, Let Them Amaze You

Yesterday, I toted Reed along to a Snap Happy Mom's meet up at the Japanese Friendship Garden. When he asked "Why Jap-you-knees Gardens?" I told him we were going to take some pictures. Fortunately, an old point & shoot camera that Reed has declared his own was in the car because he responded with "Me too takem pictures Mommy!".

And that he did! While we waited for the other moms to arrive he took pictures of the parking lot, pine needles on the ground, and a passing helicopter.

I thought for sure that once we got inside the gardens he would hand me the camera and take off. Don't get me wrong ... he TOOK OFF running alright ... but not until he took a few shots of the gardens.

I didn't look at what was on his camera until we got home. I was amazed that he was very intentional about what he wanted in his pictures. I had underestimated that he was just pushing the shutter, he actually aimed and captured what he was seeing he wanted to capture. When I showed him his uploaded pictures he said, "Ya, takem picture of flowers" ... like 'of course that's my picture, that's what we went there to do'.

He pleasantly surprises me over & over ... he also reminds me that God knows exactly what we need when we need it. Through Reed, I understand that there's no need to wait to start writing those "Workshops for Kids" that I've been planning for when he gets older ... they see beauty & wonder at ALL ages!

BOY, God sure did pack a lot into this kid!
I know every mom thinks their child is something special ... but mine sure IS!

... and one of my favorite parts of the whole story - I was able to capture him TAKING those pictures. Some day I may be HIS assistant and I'm completely okay with that!

Baby Matthew

Have you ever seen a cuter bunny?!

Not only was baby Matthew one of the cutest babies I've photographed, but his parent get the Klicken award for working the hardest I've EVER seen to get a baby to smile! Oh my goodness, they cracked ME up! I wish I had video of it! :)

These shots were to celebrate Matthew's 6 month birthday.

We had tons of fun and some of these shots are my personal favorites so far!!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and look forward to our beautiful Spring weather ... perfect weather for getting Mother's Day photos done!! (wink, wink)

Beautiful Camilla

One of the most rewarding things about my job is working with little ones like Camilla. Taking photographs of a 2 year is a LOT of work! I have a very short time to make a friend, make her feel comfortable, and try to capture the wonderful little person she is - all in under 2hrs! No easy task!

But I was determined to try to show how much spunk God packed into this little beauty! And she definitely made me work for it ... as her mom & Aunt chased her around, I tried to convince her I was a "safe place" to run towards. It took her a while to warm up to me but it was WELL worth the wait!!

Being a mom of a toddler, it was interesting to me (and a little bit of a relief) to see that some "attitude" is just part of being 2 and discovering independence. You can tell from some of the little smirks on her face, Camilla's mom has her work cut out for her!

Such a beautiful little girl ... Happy 2nd Birthday Camilla!

The best part of Spring ...

I think one of my favorite things about spring is BABIES! Spring is so full of new life! Flowers, bunnies, babies - love love love it!

It was a pleasure to photograph this little cutie again. She's already SO much bigger then when I saw her in January!

Even though I can't wait to shoot her when she's just starting to walk, I told her parents not to wish away a single moment!!

Next thing you know, they are sassing, potty training, and pretending to shoot you with a laser when you say "No more candy!" ... it all happens so fast! Enjoy every precious moment with your little ones! (and bring them to me every couple of months so we can capture it all!!)

(By the way, I made this little bonnet she's wearing so if you need shots in a special flower or color for your sweet baby - just ask! I may just make one for you!)

Look Mommy! Take'um Pictures

No one has ever seen me move as fast as I did when I heard Reed say "Look Mommy, take'um pictsher!" ... I just about knocked Randy down to get my camera! You see, I'm what Reed refers to as the 'Mommarazzi' - he avoids looking at the camera at ALL costs! To hear him ASK for me to take his picture was a 1st ... it was better then hearing "free cheeseburgers!".

It may never happen again, so I took advantage of it! I didn't even get my settings completely dialed in before he told me to stop - but hey, beggars cant be choosers!
This collage is my 1st attempt at using a storyboard template. I downloaded some templates after getting my hands on an older version of PS Elements. This one isn't perfect but I'll get the hang of it because boy, do these make life easier! Expect to see plenty more!

I haven't blogged as much as I'd like to lately. But don't worry! I have lots on my list of topics to get caught up on ... so stay tuned! I have 2 giveaways in the works, some CUTE shots of an Easter session to post, and some tips for Mom's with SLRs. Erika's Senior Session

Last week I had the honor on meeting & shooting Erika. She'll be graduating in May so we wanted to make sure to get some extra special shots.

I think she may have learned that modeling wasn't as easy as it looks! But she did a great job & we had a fun session. The location was beautiful ... Erika was beautiful ... what a great afternoon! I felt so blessed to be part of such a special time for her!

I'd like to wish Erika the best ... you only graduate high school once, so have FUN! but be SAFE!

SLR Basics Workshop

I'd like to thank the 8 or so moms who came to the workshop on Wednesday! and a big THANK YOU to Anna for setting it up.

I know its hard to listen, learn, and watch the little ones, you did great! I hope everyone took something away with them.

For those of you who missed it, here's the list of what we covered:

Automatic Modes - what are they? what do the different modes do?
Semi Automatic Modes - what are they? what do the different modes do?
Manual Mode - what is it? what do I need to practice in order to confidently use it?
3 Elements of Exposure - what does ISO, shutter speed, and aperture have to do with it?
DoF - what does it mean? what setting should I use and when?

It was a LOT to cover in about an hour, so please don't feel like you'll never understand. The key is to PRACTICE! Get out of the fully automatic mode & start practicing with Av! All moms have a perfect subject matter - their kids! You can practice by documenting the fleeting moments of their childhood. What's their favorite toy? What face do they make that just melts your heart? Do they have a favorite t-shirt? Get pictures!! 2 years from now you will have shots to take you down memory lane.

The next class will cover how to use your camera settings to get more creative shots. I will also try to cover some information on composition. So watch for information on when & where. If you aren't a Facebook Fan, become one so you don't miss it!

But if there's some burning question or you just don't know where to find the information - please ask! I may know where to direct you.

Practice, practice, practice!

The Full Service Me...

Lately, I've been really thinking about my photography business ...
where do I want to go?
who do I want to be?
how do I set those goals for myself?

One of the things I've come to realize is that like anything in life, if you are working on everything; you master nothing.

It's not easy to go from thinking about posing a bride one day to posing a high school senior the next. I feel that in order to really improve my skills, I need to focus & specialize. That led to the next question, what do I love to photograph?

I've had a few comments that my business card looks like I "only shoot babies & bellies". I put a lot of thought into that and have come to the conclusion that while I enjoy ALL photography, I'm passionate about babies & bellies. I think that shows in my work. I've also decided (for now) that weddings are an extension of that because they lead to bellies & babies!!

That's not to say that I won't be doing Family & Kid sessions ... because well, babies get older! But I think my marketing will really be more focused on Maternity & Newborn sessions. It's what I started out wanting to capture - the beginnings of God's beautiful gift! And to really feel like my work honors that, I need to get better at it.

In the meantime, I'll continue to be a 'Full Service Photographer'.
You want pictures, I'll take them.
But if you know anyone that's pregnant - send them my way!!
Practice makes perfect!

Spring is Near!

Spring is my FAVORITE time of year! I'm so excited that spring is almost here!! Sessions at the park, beautiful Arizona weather, and its perfect "Family Photo" time!

And I can't think of a better way to get excited about it then to shoot some Easter pictures ... of Emery!

Some of you may remember that I took some pictures of Emery's beautiful little smile last August (picture above right). She wear some very special little beanies for me. We had such a great time that I just about couldn't wait until it was time for her to put on a cute little Easter dress!!

Well, the time has finally arrived! ... and even though she wasn't feeling well, I think her images will still make you smile.

Beautiful Baby Boy

This week I had the pleasure of meeting little Rhett. At 7 days old, he's one of the youngest babies I've photographed.

I'm always amazed how tiny, warm, and snuggley newborns are. And that particular baby smell is God's way of making sure they WILL be snuggled!

Rhett was so much fun to capture. He never actually feel completely asleep so I patiently waited until he closed his eyes or yawned. And for a newborn, he was SO active! Already lifting his head up and making his mommy and me WORK to get him posed just the right way. All this beautiful boy wanted to do was eat. Glad he won't remember it was me that delayed his snacks!

Congrats to John & Emily. The most precious gifts are given to those who had to wait! Thank you Lord for little Rhett.

In a Blink of an Eye

Could 7 years really go by so quickly? Yes! In a blink of an eye a quite, shy, 2nd grader is suddenly a beautiful young lady. Where did that time go?

I thank the Lord you can't see in her face some of the things she's been through in those 7 years. I admire her for keeping her faith, her beautiful smile, and her kind heart despite what the world has thrown at her.

Wise beyond her years, may she never loose the little girl in her heart.

She's smart ... she's gorgeous ... she just amazes me.

The Cousins

I have to say I was a little nervous going into this shoot ... 8 adults & 6 kids! I wasn't sure where to start. Then I remembered - ALWAYS start with the kids! Why? because they are tired and dirty by halfway through the shoot.

But this was the best group of kids! They were having fun, smiling, and just made everything easy! There's a LOT of character in this family. It was a pleasure to capture just a little bit of what makes them special.

The Boy discovers Photography

Earlier this week, we went over to the Star Tower in Estrella Mountain Ranch to shoot some sunset pictures. As we got out of the car Reed asked if he could bring his 'momera' - of course!

Reed would stop here & there to 'take a shot' as we started to walk the trail up to the tower. I'm not sure if he can actually see his shot through the view finder but its awful cute watching him try! He didn't actually capture any shots (let's not tell him!) but he will get the hang of it soon.

He has taken shots of things around the house. I'll post his actual shots soon - its pretty funny to see what he takes ... pictures of mommy, daddy, his favorite stuffed bear, the dust pan. They're mostly out of focus, but one thing at a time! I wanted to frame his 1st picture for his room, until I realized that it was one of me - just rolled out of bed and in the a living room that looks like a war zone. I've since decide a little album will do just fine.

But I think my favorite part of this trip was Reed's reaction to seeing people walking the trail behind us. He told them to "Stop! Say cheese!" and tried to take shots of them! I was SO proud!! They just giggled and kept walking - maybe next time!

Once we got to the Star Tower, he was more interested in the water then his camera. But that's okay. I was able to get a couple of shots of him that I like - everyone was happy!

Waterfall Trail

Before all the rain started, we had made a trip over to the White Tanks to hike the Waterfall Trail. Its an easy trail that goes back to a natural cliff where water drains into a pool after it rains. There was a little bit of water when we were there, just enough for Reed to throw some rocks.

We were hoping Reed would walk but he gets pretty comfortable in the backpack. I guess that works out okay because we aren't ready for Reed v. cholla cactus just yet.

This hike was the 1st time Reed showed so interest in what we were shooting. He's since decided to adopt our old point & shoot (I'll post those pictures another time).

Randy always likes being out to shoot landscapes and it was fun to watch Reed climb around on the rocks. He's pretty fearless still. He learned this trip that if mommy isn't watching you when you jump, you might land on your face (read "might" as "will" if your name is Reed). Anyway, its a nice little walk and most of the trail is stroller accessible. We will definitely make a few more trips and probably pull the pop-up out there for a weekend some time soon!

Introducing Danica ...

Last week, I had the pleasure of capturing Danica. This precious 5 week old was the 1st baby to stay awake for the whole session! She decided there was just too much excitement for a nap.

I absolutely love taking photos of newborns. It's such a special thing to get to interact with a mom & her new baby. And I wish I could have taped Danica's daddy cooing and giggling at her. Babies truly are a gift from God. They are perfectly made, from their little toes to the scent of their hair - everything about them says "love me".

Danica was so sweet, she didn't cry or fuss. She just calmly watched and played along as we tried to get her into poses that only sleeping newborns should have to endure.

Shooting newborns can be tricky ... there are lots of breaks for snacking, things sometimes end up wet for one reason or another, and they aren't always in the mood to sit in front of the camera without mommy - but I love it!

I cant wait to get some more shots of Danica and I look forward to seeing her again in a couple of months!! Congrats to Jayde & Nick - Danica is beautiful blessing!

Giggles in the Rain

We don't get much rain in Arizona. Seems like when we do, it's a LOT of it! Last year I got pictures of Reed sitting in a onesie on the porch in the rain. It was 80* even though it was raining!

This year since he's a little older, we decided to let him go play in the puddles. So, we bundled him up and brought a change of clothes.

When we got out of the car and told him to run in the puddles he acted like we were crazy! He said "No puddles, stop it" and took off for the play area.

He told me "No Momera!", which means no camera, no pictures, stop pointing the lens at me! Since he was shoo-ing the "mama-razzi" I figured, oh well! Maybe some other time ....

... but anyone with a toddler knows, it has to be THEIR idea! I was disappointed because I knew he would love the puddles but instead we played a game of chase ... which means I run away pretending to be afraid of him, then turn around and start clicking away as he catches up to me. A trick I learned because he refuses to look at the camera! I'll use it while I can ... either way - we are both having fun!

Soon enough I was able to get the shots we had come for! On the way back to the car we cut through the parking lot. A parking lot with TONS of puddles ... he couldn't resist! He was so involved with puddles that I don't even think he noticed the camera!

...and I was right in thinking he would LOVE the puddles! Good thing we brought a change of clothes. And let's not forget to thank the Lord for the rain ... and for little boys & puddles.

My Photo Card bug!

Before I did photos for hire, I took photos JUST so I could scrapbook! I have a closet FULL of scrapbooking paraphernalia! Some time soon a decision needs to be made, sell it on ebay, donate it, or have one last "scrapbooking all nighter"! But don't worry, I haven't given up on scrapbooking - I just do it digitally now! Every once in a while I crave sticky glue on my fingers but there's so much you can do on the computer that I just haven't picked up a fancy bladed scissor in forever. I still create full/double page layouts for albums but now I can print the pages out 12x12 and use the file as a template! ... and I never have to run to Michael's in search of the "perfect paper".

Lately, I use photo flat cards for everything! I find that we send out tons more greetings throughout the year because I can create a card with one of my favorite photos on it! It's a great way to share pictures with friends & family and say "thank you" or "we love you" all at the same time!

It's SO much fun to create designs and layout for others (without cutting up their special photos!). And I have say, it's just as addicting as scrapbooking! So, next time you need a thank you card, Valentine, party invitation, or just a note to say hello - send me an order! Anything can be designed and for a buck a card (with envelope) its a great way to personalize your greeting!

the Cutest Cupid Ever!

One of my favorite babies to shoot is Aiden. He has such a happy personality! He makes it easy to capture his beautiful little smile.

I love doing holiday & theme shoots! Valentine's is one of my favorites but I cant WAIT to do spring & Easter!! I was so excited to finish the gold wings in time for his shoot.

One of my favorite parts about shooting babies is that Reed jumps up on the couch, holds his arms out and says "Mommy, I wanna hold baby". And yes, he held Aiden! (even though Aiden is about the same size as Reed!) I love to watch him giggle, coo, and gently touch the baby's hair - it's SO cute!

Well, my hopes SOARed!

Now that the disappointment has worn off I'd like to share my SOAR! experience. The SOAR! scholarship from Me Ra Koh was something I stumbled across on Facebook. It was an AWESOME opportunity to help 3 women take their photography business to a new level with the help of Me Ra's business consultants, marketing experts, and 1000's of dollars worth of gear.

Applying for the scholarship was one of the hardest (and most nerve wracking!) things I've ever done. Unfortunately, my personal life experiences have "trained" me to avoid putting myself in a situation that may cause me to feel let down or rejected. But I decided that I was surrounded by an actress, a videographer, and support from friends for a reason - I NEEDED to apply. (breakthrough: looking past my self doubt)

After working up the nerve, I asked my friends to help me put together a video submission. (breakthrough: asking for help) We had 2 weeks to get it all worked out and submitted. It took me just about 13 of the 14 days to figure out what I was gonna say! I had to figure out a way to (1) grab their attention so I could (2) ask for help?! oh my gosh, I suddenly realized I've spent most my adult life AVOIDING those two things! (breakthrough: see last 2 sentences)

After lots of tears, I had it written out & memorized. But I was SO nervous the day we taped that I couldn't remember a single word of it without my notes! It was a very personal & close to my heart video. I couldn't believe I was willing to share it with other people. (breakthrough: sharing weaknesses) It was a relief to finally get it submitted and out of my hands. In the time between submitting my video and the announcement of the winners, I did a lot of not only praying but begging that I would be a recipient.

After waiting until 10pm for the winners to be announced, I decided even if the little voice in my head that told me "you're not going to win, don't be disappointed" was right - I had already had broken away a lot of my self protecting cocoon. And I'll admit, I was very disappointed & cried myself to sleep that night ... but admitting that is yet another breakthrough for me. I was "over it" in record time - I had too much to do to dwell on not winning. If I was going to have to make this business work with out the scholarship to help, I had LOTS to do! It was then I realized, that was the point of the experience and I walked away from the process with a new ownership of my abilities.

I'm a different person for having applied to this scholarship. I made more breakthroughs over the 1 month process then I thought possible! I may not be one of the 3 shouting "I WON!" from the mountaintops but since I've started up that mountain, I'm going to keep climbing! The Lord has a path already picked out for me. And while it may not include a jump start in the way of a scholarship, it does include me breaking through that cocoon to be the beautiful me that I was MADE to be.

I'll soar, I'll still pull others along with me, AND I'll have a stronger voice to shout from the mountaintops when I get there!

The Storyteller in me....

Hello, my name is Barbie and I am a storyteller (then everyone says "hello, Barbie!). For those of you who know me, you know this about me already! There is always a story ... and then another one. My sisters & I can spend hours telling stories about life, about loved ones, and about the silly things we do! Even a simple trip to the grocery store is a story in my world!

This is where photography enables my creativity. I'm not a writer (as some of you may have noticed). I'm kinda shy so, not everyone gets to hear the stories that bubble around inside of my head. But with photography, I can capture & document the story that needs to be shared.

Here's where photography meets up with me as a mom. With Reed, every day holds 100's of stories. Every child is special, every child is unique, every child has a story. Everything from the way they play with their toys, to the faces they make while watching a favorite cartoon is so easily forgotten! Seems like forever all they do is play with trains, but overnight they are older and all the little details are lost.

Below is a story of a 2 year old that loves to play in his room on his own. I can sit in the corner of his room completely unnoticed because he is busy being himself. I'll share some of those photos that tell the story of how he spends time just being a toddler. He has a little plastic stool that he moves around to turn on his radio, or turn on the light, or block the door so he has enough time to get into trouble!

They may just look like pictures to you but to me they are moments that I want to remember of a little boy we prayed & waited for 9 years to arrive ... a little boy that will be a big boy in a blink of an eye!

I want to capture every little detail of Reed's childhood. How he plays with his toys, which toys are his favorite, the faces he makes while he's pretending, how he moves his mouth while he's jibber jabbering his 'Reedish'. I want to savor every ounce of his little ways. Some day he will be all grown up, married, and living apart from me ... and I will have these little glimpses of his childhood, little pieces of him captured in a photo, little moments that will always remind me to thank the Lord for Reed!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of capturing Serene.

I got some of my favorites shots from this shoot. It was hard to decide which ones to post. As beautiful as she is, she was as much fun to photograph ... such a sweet spirit!

I put her in tutus made by TutuMamas.com (beautifully made, I highly recommend their tutus & hair bows!) Add some pretties in her hair & Serene just glowed with excitement!

Every little girl should own a tutu & tiara of her own! They are ALL princesses. It was an honor to photograph this beautiful little creation! Thank you Lord for Serene.

oh! and I guess I should mention that I wasnt the only one that thought Serene was adorable!

I think Reed may be in love.

New Ventures for the New Year!!

I'm so excited about what this new year has in store for us! We have made some BIG decisions!

As some of you may know, I applied for MeRa Koh's SOAR! scholarship (side note: 3 winners will be announced TODAY! *nervous!*). Applying for this scholarship really helped me break away some of my shell. It's given me some things to reflect on and I've found that I CAN do a lot more! My fear of failure holds me back less and I'm inspired to want to get stick my neck out there just a little more & more.

That being said, I'd like to announce some new sessions that will be available to clients for the new year ... ready for it?

Klicken Photography will now be offering Wedding and San Diego Beach sessions!! I will be working on updating the pricing on the website but I'm just too excited & had to shout it out!

The first couple of sessions will be done at a drastically discounted rate, so if you're thinking about it - get in quick for the cheaper rate! I'll be posting more details on each session once I get all the i's dotted.

As a family, we are praying that this year will be blessed for everyone. We hope to become a blessing to others this year and cant wait to see what's in store for us!

A Boy with stick, Mom with Camera, Family with Eachother

Welcome to my blog!

Since this is my first entry, let me introduce you to what we like to do as a family - photo walks. Sometimes we go to the park, the White tanks, but earlier in the week we went to one of our favorites places, B&M Preserve. There's lots to explore there and Reed (who turned 2 y/o in Sept) LOVES to run around there while we shoot.

We decided to go down just before sunset. Man, did it get cold quick! But we managed to get out without fishing Reed out of the water this time. While I'm taking shots of them, his daddy takes shots of the scenery, and Reed plays with rocks, bugs & sticks!

It was a nice time. I'm really excited that Randy got his own camera so we can both shoot. Reed is excited that daddy cares more about pictures of mountains then pictures of him. And Randy is excited to just get out into nature.

The Dept of Fish & Game has been doing a good job of cleaning the area up. It's much nicer down there then last year. You should go check it out, the parking lot is literally just below Phoenix Int'l Raceway. We're looking forward to spending more time there ... maybe start fishing for the new year!
